2018 Joe Louis Barrow, Jr. Life Skills & Leadership Academy

Nearly 100 junior golfers from The First Tee attend the Joe Louis Barrow, Jr. Life Skills and Leadership Academy each year. Teen participants have the opportunity to develop and hone skills to become leaders in their chapters, schools, and communities while experiencing championship golf, career exploration, and dorm living. In November 2017, the Academy was renamed to the Joe Louis Barrow, Jr. Life Skills & Leadership Academy. The endowment was made to honor his retirement and commitment to positively impacting young people during the last 18 years as CEO of The First Tee. The 2018 Life Skills & Leadership Academy will take place in East Lansing, MI from July 25 – 31. The Academy is staged by The First Tee Headquarters and is hosted by Michigan State University and The First Tee of Mid-Michigan. Congratulations to the participants and coaches selected for the academy! This event is only available to teens involved in chapters of The First Tee. Most of the events and programs have a selection process that includes an application reviewed by a committee. Parents, if you want your child to participate, please inquire at your chapter.
Our very own EAGLE participant, Terry Uhm, had the chance to attend the Life Skills and Leadership Academy in East Lansing, MI. We are so proud of Terry and all of her accomplishments! “This past week was an incredible experience for me at the Joe Louis Barrow Jr. Life Skills and Leadership Academy! The best thing about it was the opportunity to meet other First Tee participants around the nation and come together with one common goal, to be leaders out on the course and in our community. This experience has made me reposition my goals for my future and reflect on my character. I will always cherish the fun memories and relationships made in Michigan and I want to thank The First Tee and The First Tee of Fort Smith for allowing me to go through this life changing opportunity. “- Terry Uhm
